The Blythe house

 

The Blythe house is a small museum for V&A and British museum. It was build at 1900 as a bank. Then at 1970 V&A and British museum use it as a storage of collection. Today I was so pleasure got a chance to visit here and had a short time to enjoy in this amazing place. When I was have a chance to visit the small exhibition I was so exciting about it. There was a small exhibition display those old and previous textile books. These books were collect all the fabric and technique from 1970s. It was amazing presentation showed the history of textile change all the decades, how the price drop or rise and the changes of popular pattern, it was a show about the technology process development. Furthermore, it was a history of textile was disappear and it was an example about how the museum save a part of history.

The fabric in this collection was not exist on the world and out of our life now. That was what the collect lecture told about the one of functions of museum is save some history and protect the history of human life.

Rough Guide Reflection

 

In this project, I supposed to explore the Bond street area and Piccadilly circle. In the research process, I walked on the street and discovered the patterns on the floor which had change step by step. That inspirited me to draw the changed roads and made it to be the topic of my first project. What I found out is that this area all about showing the price and symbol to buyer. And people on the street were both very busy for shopping or working.  

There was a chance that I went to the ' Let it be' musical at this weekend which  in the theater locate at Piccadilly circle. There was totally different at Saturday night. There were lots of people walked on the street or sit on the floor just talking or having fun. Same of artists made up and dress up as a art then stand on the street or play music on the square. People got around and had fun with each other. I was really enjoyable in such London . Let me felt the friendly from strangers with typical British style. Also, shopping mark and stores were still open for people. The LED screen and street light make Piccadilly square bright and sexy in the dark night. Then I walked in the street saw groups of people moved and changed in front of my eyes. Suddenly, I had a idea about describing Piccadilly by using light and people group in the Saturday night.

 

Then I began to use the elements of changing road and Piccadilly night in the collaborative project. Furthermore, after I draw all the patterns and sketch the night in Piccadilly circle. I did try to use different material to represent the topic in my project. I thought this was an effective way to transfer my topic into textile ideas. Also it was a way to know about material and shows the change of different texture. 

Reflection of Techinical Block

Technical Block 1 weave

 

In this technical block I started to learn what is the weave technical and how it is work to become fabric. And this was my first time to learn how to used loom and knew about the structure of weaving. What I felt really appreciated about this two weeks is that I began to study the first technical and I was really enjoy in it. I tried to use different loom to creative different patterns. And also I did really happy when I tried to creative structures by figure out different loom. However, What I think I still need to tired more different material and I did not know how to figure out the weave structure of fabric when I deconstructed a piece of fabric.

 

Technical block 2 knit

 

 

In this technical block I was really enjoyed in studying knitting machine. And I had lots of different technical practices with hand knitting. The first time I learn to used knitting machine felt excited and interested when the outcome showed out. I found that was really impressive me when I used different colors and changed tension. Also, Studying crochet was a new experience to me. I was so happy to learn and obtain a new technique. But what I felt not enough in knitting block was that I had not try to use lot different material and knit technical. Also I felt really hard to control the knitting machine. And still I need to practice alot with the hand knitting and knitting machine.

 

Technical block 3 stitch

 

 

In this technical block, Mostly I felt so stressful about thinking creative work and using various material. I was get to know lots different material and also tired to work out those material. At this technical block, using different stitch way open my mind on   re-creative fabric and focus on the importance of selecting material. Finally, I obtain lots different experience of using different kinds of material. And I grad to tired lots techniques during these two weeks. It is effected my work and wide my abilities of new technical. However, I still thought that stitch was really hard for me. I always thought that I need to get to know more and more material as I could. I felt I still had not tired my best in the workshop.

In this technical block, I was really exciting about screen print process. I love hand dry and all the hand crafts technical. Also the digital print lessons given me a totally new technique about computer. I was so impressive by the hand dry fabric outcome and I love the process I made the color by myself. Also the Photoshop lessons were really useful. This was the first time I tried to use computer and learn to use Photoshop. The outcome from Photoshop surprised me and I basically obtained the ability of Photoshop. However, I did not have enough time to practice more in this block and I should tried different drawing style then watch different effects showed out. And I did think I was lack of practices of Photoshop.

Reflective Statement for Blog

 

During the blog process, First of all, it was a reflection of the lecture and it made me summery those theory again. Then, It developed my writing and reading during I wrote all the reflections and study tasks. Finally, Blog was a effective way to controls and manages my study life in college and storages my new theory knowledge day by day. Also it worked very well throughout all the academic term and It was a journal of my studying life. However, I felt really stressful with my English writing or other language problems. At the research process, It was a really hard work for me to read or selected textual from books. The blog research process was help me to improved my reading ability .Then in the analysis process, I impressive by the context of those lectures. I inspirited from the theory and tasks. Also I selected parts of points and views which  developed my mind. The idea from the lecture were really inspiriting .At the final presentation process, I use these critical thinking and the methods from the lecture to visit in the museums. Also, I had experience practices with the new impressive theory from lecture. And I made it to became my own analysis system. And I combined the lecture theory with the museum exhibitions then made a clearly presentation of my studying experience. I should be more hard work and update it on time. But still, I did wrote every reflection after each lecture and technical blocks. However, for the study tasks. Some of them I did finish on time, but some of them which need to add quotations that made me felt stressful with reading books.

The military long tail coat

3 special parts of military uniform decorates people figure

 

 

1 this picture is a officer's levee dress coatee from 1815 to 1820

this coat was design with a high collar with typical two ranges of buttons. Base on this military coat, it has a different design on the shoulder parts. This design made officers looks more stronger and taller. Also the high collar decorates officer neck then made people looks more taller. Then ranges of buttons made people figure looks more taller and official. However the collar design only use in the officer uniform. Because it is tide and inconvenient to move.

 

 

 

2 This is a womanswear fashion design from Balmain fashion show 2009.

In this design, it is a strongly military style also it has these three typical military design. The black and shining collar, high shoulder and ranges of button. As showing in this jack, the military elements strongly influence fashion in nowadays. And also military elements always being popular in fashion design. Then fashion designers make those element more fixable and more fashion on clothes. In mostly high class and luxury fashion brand, military element already became a great way to help they to decorate their design.

 

 

 

3 A coat from TOPSHOP at 2012

This is my first military style coat. I bough it at 2012 winter in Topshop. It also has these three design. High collar, strong shoulders and ranges of button. What I felt very differently from other style coat is that military coat decorates my body figure. It makes me more taller and official than daily life. Especially, the shoulder design made me looks more powerful. And ranges of button decorates on the cloth make my body looks thin than before. This is how the military element work in high street design for ordinary customers.

 

In the fashion industry, military elements were influence fashion design during the war time or ever earlier. According to Answers website stated :'' military fashion enters the civilian wardrobe in varied ways...Military traditions often enter civilian dress in ways that are only partly remembered''.(Military Influences on Fashion) In the fashion industry, Military elements are always influence people clothing all the time. Also according to the Answers website stated:'' Scottish civilians have been a recurring feature of modern civilian dress, with attenuated links to Scotland and to the military source. Not only the plaid, But even the kilt and over-the-shoulder drape are of military origin.'' (Military Influences on Fashion)These military elements are presentable and popular in the fashion industry and strongly influence people clothing. Also these elements work every well on different class fashion design. According to John Bull stated :'' military clothing has found its way into popular culture and high street fashion in particular. Military clothing strikes a chord with the fashion inclined due to its adaptability and clean cut and simplistic principles which really lend itself to high street fashion.''(Military Clothing) In the long tail coat, the high collar, strong shoulder and ranges of button decorated human figure, make people looks more taller and official. And those simplistic designs keeping popular in fashion industry for long time and became a specific style in fashion design. John Bull stated :'' It is unquestionably the case that much military clothing is inherently stylish and this is why it has become popular amongst civilian fashion fans." (Military Clothing)

The Leg Prosthesis Collection

There was a picture catch my eyes. It is a picture called '' Philippa Verry drinking coffee using her foot'' photography by Frank Herrmann for news international at 1973. This picture was make me feel so great and I even think this girl was a normal people with a healthy body. As the Philippa said '' when I look at this photograph I realize what a wonderful, confident and happy childhood I had '' From this statement, also showed that people was more focus on normal body than others in recent society. According to Paterson stated :'' everyday environments the impaired body 'dys-appears' both functionally and aesthetically in that it dose not fit in, there is no place for it, yet through this very process if bodily dys-appearing, disabled people's attention is often drawn to their own bodies-reminding them of their impairment and that they are 'other'.''(P173 1999) Our aethestic stander influenced by traditional thought which came with our own culture and developed by itself. People already had their own rules to described this world which set by the social conscious. Then they defined things base on what they already believe. Then, the society will help disable people to pretend to be 'normal' as parts of the society. Actually, resent society was not treat disable people equally in visual culture. According to Judy stated '' Disable students sometimes face particular barriers or discrimination in securing placements and may therefore need extra support.'' (P19 2001)Obviously, they still became 'stranger' in society. Because this society bring 'standard' traditional thought to people then people influence back to the society and continue the thought. There is a strong standard to judge human aesthetics. This standard was make everyone believe What is normal or what is not. Also it was influence people beauty ideals. The standard of 'normal' makes people to change themselves and also leads this society.

The Pathology of Collecting

 

This is a video about coins collection. The collector was collected coins by different age, countries and patterns. As he showing in the video, those coins were already out of the function they had. And it was more valuable than the value of the coin. Base on Jean Baudrillard stated that '' In this respect, the objects in our lives, as distinct from the way we make use of them at a given moment, represent something much more, something profoundly related to subjectivity: for while he object is a resistant material body, it is also, simultaneously, a mental realm over which I hold sway, a thing whose meaning is governed by myself alone.''（The System of Collecting） Furthermore, the personal collector also had his favour piece which was shows that the collection became his daily passion. Then throughout this video, I could understand the object divested of its function clearly. Basically, those coins were still work and trade in the world now. As Jean Baudrillard stated that '' All objects that are possessed submit to the same obstractive operation and participate in a mutual relationship in so far as they each refer back to the subject. They thereby constitute themselve as a system. on the basis of which the subject seeks to piece together his world, his personal microcosm.''（The System of Collecting） As for the collector those coins came from different countries but now those coins were in his personal system. They will link to each other and obtained the  collector's feeling and memorize.

Study task 3

Pre-Raphaelite's show

 

 

The ' Pre-Raphaelites' Exhibition was display in the Tate Britain. The exhibition was separate into seven parts: Origins and Manifesto, History, Nature, Salvation, Beauty, Paradise and Mythologies. However, this exhibition was display by different subjects on paintings not artists. Firstly, when I crossed around the exhibition I only discovered characteristics of this style of painting. The bright colors, flat surfaces they used and also they focused on the truth to nature. As the exhibition presents a movement of art and it was also made a contribution to the modern art, I was interesting about why the exhibition do not shows the painting by artist. Then I try to review those amazing drawings by artist I found more details than the label described. I thought the label was explain the meaning of painting but also it was lead audience mind into what their expected. I was impressive to figure out what the dominate text work for and enjoy in the exhibition in this way. But I was not only study a work by label then more focus on what I learned and got from the work. What I had discover in those paintings were more personally experience. I was explain those works by my own limit knowledge and special culture background. It was more individual and personal views. Also it was a really hard practice for me to enjoy in a painting without label texts.

Study task 2

The TED

 

At the second week, we had introduction about Textile Environment Design. As for me, the TED introduction opened my mind and wide my vision then let me think and knew more about textile in the ways I never thought about. In TED ten, I started to know about textile more deeply. My manifesto is ' let my design to be the media to transfer material and let it to be a function of recycling'. In this lecture, I learned some great theory and also it impressed me in deep , the first point, textile is a transfer way to make thing from somewhere to somewhere and textile design became a media to transfer stuff to make a minimize waste. In this way, the meaning of textile is more than what I thought before. Besides, I tried to put this idea in my project, and tried to know how to use materials and transfer it from other . Also in point 2, There was mention that we should think the upcycling and repair functions. From this part, my personal point of textile is that it means more over a kind of fabric design, and it was prefer to shows a function of fabric. Final, I combined those useful ideas and plan to know more about this area. But still, my manifesto will always be the aim I working for.

Exercises In getting Lost and Flanerie

Covent Garden

 

 on the way walked from oxford street to covent garden

 

I and my friend were started at Oxford street and decided to go to Covent Garden base on the exercises structure. After we circled the area called 'Covent Garden' we began to walk to Covent garden. This journey was really experience. I walked on the street without map or any direction. We just walked around and cross those streets. We discovered lots interesting shops and felt like walking in the movie. Then we lost in the Piccadilly circle. But during this experience, I found out walking in London is a great way to get to know about this city. London surprise us step by step with vintage shops or interesting shops with old-fashion style. We finally figure out we were lost in Piccadilly then we asked other people for help us how to walk to Covent Garden. During all the hours walk journal, I could felt strongly the relaxing British lifestyle when I walking in the Covent Garden and enjoy in the night life. Throughout this exercise. I fell in love with walking in the city without aim and without map. And it is a best way to knew about a city and it's culture.

 

Exercise 2 Cambridge

There is a chance for me to enjoy in a ball hold by one college of university of Cambridge. What I experience at Cambridge is that I walk from my friend's home to Queen's college and have a trip to visit Cambridge on boat. These are two totally different experience to explore an area. On the boat, I could felt another angle of this city. But I could felt and watch the culture and custom during walking. In Cambridge, every building has their own characteristics and they are old enough to make people feeling living in the past. I love this way to know about a city . It make me more familiar with this city and have my own view of this city.
